Playback teatro metodas yra artimas psichodramos metodui, taip pat turintis ir forumo teatro elementų. Vedantysis kalbina žiūrovus, „ištraukia“ iš jų emociją ar istoriją ir nurodo aktoriams, kokia teatro forma atspindėti tai, ką jaučia žiūrovas. Tokiu būdu susirinkusieji scenoje, tarsi veidrodyje, išvysta savo jausmus bei istorijas. Po pasirodymo skiriama laiko pokalbiui.
